Oh my gosh! Where do I start? The weekend seems a blur already, but I think the weather
held in our favor......raining at night and not during competition times. Robert Griswold
of Olympia handled the duties of judge with utmost ease and his characteristic humor. More
and more of our competitors are coming to appreciate Bob's skills in both the ridden and
driven disciplines.........there were a number of witnesses to a dear friend, who competed
the weekend before at the Driving Trials-Twice! getting a jumping lesson after the day of volunteering.
Our competitors--they are the absolute best you can find anywhere! 27 competitors,
9 of whom were competing here for their very first time, from Washington and Oregon, brought
their Miniature Horses for the weekend. What an
awesome group....sharing and learning together...........and don't forget laughing-whether
at their own mistake, or sharing a giggle at the goof of a friend (established or new). And
did I mention the learning together? We had one mini who knew he wasn't a mini at 39½" tall,
so he came to play and learn, competing in the competition as "HC" so he and owner could
learn and go home to encourage his slightly smaller barn mates to give it a try.
Sue of Sowerby's Restaurant in Chehalis handled the food responsibilities wonderfully.
She set up her concession trailer for lunches for all the competitors, volunteers and
officials, and then served a Lemon Pepper Chicken dinner that sent everyone back to the
barn satisfied. She will be back many more times.
Normally, as competitors drive into the hazards, they call out their number to the volunteers. This event we had a gentleman who simply announced himself as "Mr. September". I guess it was because the weekend was the debut of Wendi Ross' 2008 Happ's Very Small Equine Edition
Calendar. They were a very popular item as people looked for pictures of themselves and
their friends. Wendi has a series of Happ's Competitor Calendars for 2008. You can order them at:
