Trail Horse Challenge Rules

Happ's Trail Horse Challenges will use the following rules. Management reserves the right to settle all disputes and resolve any issues that arise not covered by these rules.

  1. Happ's Waiver must be on file for all persons handling equine. Riders under 18 must have signature of parent/legal guardian.
  2. Helmets are required for all riders under 18 years of age. They are recommended for all riders.
  3. Each participant is responsible for his/her own safety and that of his/her mount.
  4. Each participant must maintain control of his/her mount at all times on the grounds - on and off the course.
  5. Equine must be ridden with bridle or hackamore and a saddle. (Championship rounds may be designated as ridden bareback.)
  6. Any type saddle and bridle/bosal are allowed as long as they are in good working condition.
  7. Appropriate equestrian footwear is required.
  8. There is no limit to the number of mounts a participant may compete on.
  9. A rider/horse combintion may only compete for awards at one level. They may ride both levels for experience.
  10. Stallions may be ridden by riders 18 and older. If a stallion becomes an issue, he will be asked to leave.
  11. No riding double on the grounds (unless an obstacle involves carrying a second person).
  12. No hitting in front of the cinch.
  13. No loose foals.
  14. Mounts at a walk except in warm-up area and on designated areas of the course.
  15. Dogs must be tied in camp, or on a leash and under control at all times. No dogs are allowed in the barn, office, warm-up area, or on the course. A fine of $25 will be imposed for each infraction of this rule.

Rules specific to the course:

  1. Competitors will be started three minutes apart.
  2. Competitors may pass on course.
  3. Competitors may not buddy up on course. Competitors approaching an obstacle together will each be given a score of zero for that obstacle.
  4. Competitors and equines are judged only when negotiating an obstacle. They will be observed at other times for safety purposes.
  5. A marker will indicate where judging begins for each obstacle.
  6. A maximum of three (3) refusals will be allowed at any one obstacle. Competitors will be asked to continue on. This is a competition, not a time for schooling. Competitors may school at other times, see info on Schooling.
  7. There is a two minute time limit per obstacle. Competitors will be asked to move on.
  8. Judges may ask competitors to by-pass an obstacle or leave the course if it is deemed that continuing would be unsafe for the competitor or his/her equine.
  9. Management will require withdrawl of any competitors deemed to be abusive.
  10. Judges decisions are final.
